Dancing Around The World - San Salvador
Tuesday, July 21st, 2015Dear Friends and supporters of NY2Dance
It's almost August and we are in Helsinki on our way to the Full Moon Dance Festival to be artist in Residence for a week before going to Berlin with Dancing Around The World. We just finished editing a short video of the experience in San Salvador that I would like to share with you here. Our stay in San Salvador was intense, we had full days of workshops and a performance at the National Theater of
What Dreams May Come . Our host Asocacion de Arte Dramatico directed by Fernando Umana organized the residency for us. During our stay in San Salvador we performed What Dreams May Come at the National Theater to a captivated audience. In the two week residency I also taught an open workshop of Contemporary Dance as part of Dancing Around The World - San Salvador in the National School of Dance. Throughout the residency we created a site specific scene which was performed and filmed in the new public transportation system and the Plaza del Mundo. The people we have encountered were all very generous with their time and passionate creators. It was amazingly inspiring to teach and interact with people who have to deal with daily gang violence and the corrupt political situation but still manage to be so creative, eager for knowledge and very passionate for life. The site specific performances were more controlled than in other countries due to the dangers of the city. During our visit in San Salvador the US Embassy advised against traveling to El Salvador due to the violence in the city.
We have been on tour since April 12th and I have taught workshops in five cities and performed in Medellin, San Salvador, Tegucigalpa and Lima What Dreams May Come. We have shared with you our experiences of Bogota, Medellin, Lima and Santiago virtually and now happy to share with you Dancing Around The World - San Salvador.
I feel so blessed to be able to travel around the world and share my passion of the art of moving and dancing and not just on site but also share these mini films. What an inspiring way to get an insight into a culture and share your passion through movement!!! The performance of Dreams May Come was very special: people were filled with tears and gratitude after the show. It was so rewarding to see how moved and inspired the audience was, but mostly it was a very rich experience working intimately with local dancers and seeing how much closer they got to their inner beings and how their senses sharpened throughout the process.
We are looking forward to sharing with you our Tegucigalpa experience with Mujeres en Las Artes next. It's been an inspiring experience so far.
